Transy falls in rugged senior day match up

Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania dropped a 74-65 decision to Anderson Saturday in a rugged men's Heartland Conference basketball mathcup at the Beck Center.

The loss dropped Transy to 16-7 overall, 10-6 HCAC, while the Ravens are 16-7, 12-4 HCAC. Anderson came into the contest leading the Pioneers by a game and in third-place in the conference race behind Hanover and Manchester.

Saturday was also Senior Day as fourth-year players Scott Bauman (Lexington, Ky.) and Matt Wise (Gainesville, Fla.) were honored prior to tip-off.

Brandon Rash (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) and Tate Cox (Hindman, Ky.) led the Pioneers with 17 points each.  It was a career-high for Cox, who previously scored 13 points in two games earlier this season. Rash also finished with three rebounds and a team- high five assists.  Cox added two rebounds and one assist.

Transy trailed by as many as 15 in the second half, until a three-pointer from Ashley Hatfield (Pikeville, Ky.) sparked a rally, cutting the lead down to four with 1:13 to go.  Anderson managed to keep the ball out of the hands of the Pioneers for most of the remaining time.

The Pioneers led in points off the bench 20-3 over the Ravens, and also in second chance points 14-6.  Transy was able to outrebound Anderson 32-26.

The Ravens were led by Andrew Bowman with 22 points and six rebounds.  Phil Hogan also finished with six rebounds to go along with his 16 points.

The Pioneers entered the locker room at the half trailing by seven, 35-28.  Cox led Transy for the first period with 10 points.  Hatfield led the team in rebounds with three and Rash finished the first 20 minutes with eight points and three assists.

Anderson shot 63 percent from the field in the first half, to the Pioneer's 42.3 percent.  Points were spread evenly among the Raven offense at the half.

Transy will complete its regular season on the road next week, traveling to Earlham Wednesday and Manchester next Saturday. The HCAC tournament begins on Feb. 25 at the site of the HCAC regular season champion.
