TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Transylvania's
Taylor Ballard had a potential game-winning goal turned aside in the final seconds Saturday, leaving the Pioneers with a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Rose-Hulman in Heartland Conference men's soccer action.
The Pioneers and Engineers continue to share the HCAC lead with 4-0-1 league records. Transy is 10-1-2 overall while Rose-Hulman is 8-4-3. Transy has six wins and two ties in its last eight contests.
Rose-Hulman scored first in the contest, getting a goal at the 9:17 mark. That advantage stood at halftime in the evenly played contest.
Transy tied the game in the 58th minute on a goal by
Eric Froschauer, who converted the first of two
Tyler Crombie assists. It was the fifth goal of the year for Froschauer.
Transy almost immediately took its first lead of the contest when
Kyle Smith tallied his league-leading 12th goal of the year just four minutes after Froschauer's score. That lead would stand until Rose-Hulman put in the game-tying score with 14 minutes to play.
Transy outshot Rose-Hulman 12-9 overall, which included a 4-1 edge in the two 10-minute overtime periods. Transy had all three of the shots taken in the second overtime, which included a try by
Stephen Willoughby with three minutes to go that was wide. Ballard missed to the left in the 109th minute, and again as time ran out when the keeper blocked his game-winning attempt.
Pioneer keeper
Taylor Nossokoff had five saves for the visitors while the Engineers' Drew Miller had four. Transy led in corners, 8-3.
The Pioneers will host Earlham on Wednesday when the Quakers visit Thomas Field for a 4 p.m. contest.
