LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania broke open a tight game with five runs in the fifth inning Saturday, highlighted by a three-run homer by
Sam Liggett, and the Pioneers won the first game of a Heartland Conference doubleheader with Franklin by a 7-1 count at Marquard Field.
The Pioneers (15-14, 8-7 HCAC ) dropped the second game of the day, 16-8. The Grizzlies improved to 21-7, 9-5 in the conference.
Bugh pitched a seven-inning complete game for the Pioneers, scattering five hits and allowing just one unearned run. He had four strikeouts and one walk while winning his fifth game in six decisions.
Liggett and
Zach Bynum each had two hits for the Pioneers and Bynum scored twice with one RBI.
Zach Muench and
Ken Riley also had RBIs for Transy, which outhit the visitors 9-5 in the game.
In the second game, Transy jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the second inning and still led 6-4 after three. Franklin used a five-run sixth and a four-run seventh to pull away. The Grizzlies out-hit the Pioneers 20-13 and overcame three errors.
Starter
Jamie King went 3.1 innings and gave up seven hits and six runs, five earned.
Royce Neeley took the loss after permitting a hit and a run in 1.1 innings of work.
Shelby Dixon,
Ryan James, and
Graham Winchester also took the mound for the Pioneers.
Bynum and
Johnny Renz each had three hits for Transy and
Nick Edwards added two hits and four RBI.
Kevin Brinkman added two hits, including a triple, and scored a run while driving in another. Liggett had two more hits and scored twice.
After a break for final exams, Transy returns to action on Saturday when it opens a three-game set against Rose-Hulman. The doubleheader at Marquard Field begins at noon.
