Late Transy rally falls short, 69-64

Box Score HANOVER, Ind. – Transylvania wiped out all but four points of a 20-point Hanover first half lead Wednesday, but the Panthers held on for a 69-64 win in men's Heartland Conference basketball action.
 
The Pioneers are 10-4, 5-2 HCAC, after seeing their six-game win streak halted. The Panthers improved to 8-6, 5-2 in conference play. Transy entered the contest one game back of Rose-Hulman in the league standings.
 
Transy scored the first five points of the game only to see the home team regain the advantage, building a lead of as many as 20 points en route to a 47-31 cushion at the break.
 
Hanover connected on 54 percent of its first-half field goal attempts, compared to 43 percent for the Pioneers, and the Panthers had a 24-11 edge on the boards.
 
Ethan Spurlin led Transy in the half with 11 points while Brandon Rash and Tate Cox, who was three of three from long range, each contributed nine points. Tim Bass had 12 points and six assists for Hanover.
 
The Pioneers would mount a comeback over the final 20 minutes, closing to 68-64 on Rash's layup with nine seconds to go. Hanover went four of 10 on free throws in the final minute to give Transy a chance.
 
Spurlin came into the game with 982 career points. He scored 17 to increase his total of 999. He is trying  to become the 45th Pioneer men's basketball player to reach 1,000. Spurlin also had seven rebounds and three steals.
 
Rash led Transy with 19 points and eight rebounds to go with two assists, two steals, and two blocks. Cox had 17 points and seven rebounds, hitting five of eight from long range.
 
Ryan Nowicki and Tim Bass each scored 16 points to lead Hanover, which ended up shooting 43 percent from the field compared to 44 percent for Transy. Hanover's bench outscored Transy's, 17-5. Neither team shot well from the free throw line, with Hanover connecting on 12 of 22 while the Pioneers finished eight of 18.
 
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Terre Haute to take on Rose-Hulman.
