TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A hard-fought battle turned up empty for the Transylvania men's soccer team on Saturday, falling short of an Heartland Conference title in a 1-0 double overtime loss to Rose-Hulman.
The Pioneer defense put up a valiant fight against Rose-Hulman, only allowing one shot to find the back of the net.
Transylvania kicked off the game with high energy. Rose-Hulman recorded the first shot, but junior goalkeeper
Taylor Nossokoff stood his ground, making his first of eight total saves of the matchup.ÂÂ
The Pioneers responded minutes later with a shot by senior Eric Froshcauer, but the attempt was diverted by Engineer goalkeeper . Minutes later, Froschauer attempted again, but this time, the shot sailed high.
Nossokoff's talent as a goa-keeper shone in the final minutes of the second half, when he thwarted a header and subsequent shot attempt by Rose-Hulman, sending the teams tied into halftime, 0-0.
Intensity continued to mount in the second half. Transylvania had an aggressive start with a shot attempt by senior
Kyle Smith and a follow-up shot attempt by Froschauer, that were saved and blocked by the Engineers.
The teams continued to exchange shots, but after 90 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless, sending the match into overtime.
The first 10-minute overtime produced little results as the teams played a tennis-like rally. Only two shots were attempted in the first overtime period by the Engineers, both saved by Nossokoff, but both nets remained solid. After a back-and-forth battle, the teams were headed into the second overtime.
A mere 16 seconds into the second overtime, Rose-Hulman made a break through the Pioneer defense, sailing a shot into the Transylvania cage, downing the Pioneers, 1-0.ÂÂ
Transylvania's defense had a strong performance against a tough Engineer offense, allowing only one of 15 shot attempts. Despite the Pioneers netting 43 goals as a team this season, putting them second in the conference for goals scored, the shots just didn't fly on Saturday.
The Pioneers season may not be finished, as the team is eligible to earn an at-learge bid in the NCAA tournament, when the selections are announced on Monday.
