TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Transylvania was held to six hits Sunday while falling to Rose-Hulman 5-0 to split a Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader.
The Pioneers are 14-13, 7-7 HCAC, while the Engineers move to 11-15, 8-5 in conference action. With the split, Rose-Hulman took two of the three games in the series.
Transy came out on top in the first game by a 3-1 margin. The Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first only to see Rose-Hulman tie it in the fourth. Transy posted runs in the sixth and eighth frames while holding the home team off the scoreboard.
Shelby Dixon (3-1) had a complete-game seven hitter, striking out two with two walks.
Kameron Mason and J.M. Cowley each had two hits for Transy while Mason and
Hunter Jones each had RBIs.
Zach Bynum had a double and scored a run.
Cowley had a leadoff single in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch. In the eighth,
Zach Riney scored on Jones' sacrifice fly.
In the second game, Transy was blanked on four hits heading into the final inning. The Pioneers loaded the bases with one out, but couldn't push any runs home.
Rose-Hulman scored three second-inning runs then tacked on single scores in the fourth and eighth frames.
Kameron Schwartz started for the Pioneers and went 3.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs. He was followed by
Blake Oyler and
Matt Birkenhauer, who blanked the home team.
Elliot Desilets was touched for three hits and a run.
Cowley led the Pioneers with a pair of hits.
The Pioneers are back in action on Friday when they open a three-game set with Bluffton at Marquard Field.
