FRANKLIN, Ind. â€" Transylvania men's basketball three-game winning streak was snapped on Wednesday, as they fell narrowly to the Franklin Grizzies, despite a last minute comeback effort, 97-93.
"Franklin made big plays down the stretch and outworked us for second shots," said Head Coach
Brian Lane. "We must get better defensively to win on the road in this tough conference."
The well-rounded scoring effort continued against Franklin, as four players recorded double figures. The offense was led by two bench players, freshman
Ethan Rowe, who netted 22 points, and freshman
Logan Wade, who netted 20 points in the loss. Freshman
Garrett Dorfman (19) and freshman point guard
Mason Monroe (16) also made an impact, especially in the seeming absence of sophomore
Parker Stansberry and sophomore
Joe Jennings, who were held to six and three points, respectively.
Transylvania struggled in the opening minutes of gameplay against the Grizzly defense. With 11 minutes remaining in the first, the Pioneers were only 3-for-13 shooting from the field and 1-for-5 from behind the arc. The 23 percent shooting resulted in a quick eight-point deficit, 19-8.
With an offensive-defensive substitution rotation in motion, the Pioneers began mounting an impressive comeback thanks to a rally by the Transylvania bench.
In the following eight minutes, Transylvania went 11-for-22, netting buckets and taking fouls to tie the game around the two-minute mark. By the halftime buzzer, Transylvania had managed a 5-point, 46-41, lead as they headed to the locker room. The effort was made in part by the duo of Rowe and Dorfman, who combined for 26 points of the team's first-half points.
"The starting unit got down early and the bench came in and gave us life to rally to take the lead at half," said Coach Lane.
The second half was a rollercoaster of scoring, as the Grizzlies and Pioneers battled to maintain an advantage. Coach Lane began subbing in his bench, who again, made an impact.
"The slow start in second half forced us to sub and once again the bench came through," said Coach Lane. "It definitely was not the best effort from a couple guys we have really been getting good production from."
Down eight, with one minute left in regulation, Transylvania began grinding out the final minutes with smart inside shots and full-court press defense. The press caused the Grizzlies to misstep with15 seconds remaining, giving up a free two-point jumper to Monroe and cutting the Grizzlies' lead to two.
The Pioneers fouled down the stretch, taking chances on Franklin's free-throw shooting, but the Grizzlies connected, going 86 percent from the line. Despite the defensive effort and perimeter attempts, the shots didn't fall in the final seconds, snapping Transylvania's win streak.
Transylvania won the turnover battle, causing 16 Franklin turnovers and recording nine steals. However, it was the Grizzlies' effort on the boards in the second half that gave them second-chance points, as they dominated 39 to Transylvania's 26.
"The inability to rebound in the second half was key," said Coach Lane.
Transylvania men's basketball heads to Rose-Hulman on this road stretch, facing the Fightin' Engineers at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25.
