Men's basketball falls to hot-shooting Rose-Hulman, 66-38

Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. â€" The Pioneer offense was silenced Saturday, thanks to a strong defending, hot-shooting Rose-Hulman team, as Transylvania men's basketball fell on the road, 66-38.

Though struggling offense couldn't produce a leading scorer in double digits, the Pioneers were led by freshman point guard Mason Monroe with nine points, followed by sophomore guard Joe Jennings with eight. Jennings also led the Pioneers in rebounding, recording eight.

Despite trumping the first-place conference team at home on Dec. 7, the Pioneers faced a much-improved Engineer squad in Terre Haute.

Though the Engineers outrebounded Transylvania 41-29, the greatest differential came in scoring. The Pioneers went only 26 percent shooting from the field, and 3-of-21 from the three-point line. The Engineers' defensive pressure forced uncomfortable shots, allowing only 19 points from the Pioneers each half and holding Transylvania to the team's lowest point total since December 2010.

Rose-Hulman lit up the court in the opening minutes, recording a 16-2 advantage just four minutes into the contest, going 5-for-6 from the field, and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. There was a three-minute lapse until Transylvania could net its second basket, coming off the hands of freshman Ethan Rowe in a solid three-pointer to shorten the Engineer advantage, 12-5.

Transylvania struggled to gain traction against the Engineers throughout the first. However, poor shot selection by Rose, and rebounding by the Pioneers, silenced Rose's scoring for nearly four minutes.

It was sophomore Joe Jennings who put the first points on the board during a seven-minute scoring drought, nailing two free throws with eight minutes remaining.  But, a long 3-pointer by Rose's Jake Dodd at the 7-minute mark increased the Engineer advantage to 23-9.

The Engineer momentum was too much to overcome, as they went on a 6-0 scoring streak, taking their largest lead at that point at the 3-minute mark, 29-11. But then, in came Monroe.

In less than two minutes, Monroe netted two layups, drew a foul, and made two clutch free-throws to cut the Engineer advantage to 33-17. The Pioneers would record only two more points, off free-throws from sophomore Parker Stansberry, with a minute remaining. Heading into the half, Transylvania trailed 37-19.

Rose-Hulman hit an impressive 55 percent from the field in the first half, cutting through the Transylvania lanes. But, it was the 11 turnovers and 30 percent shooting that left the Pioneers in a hole at the end of the first.

Out of the half, Rose took no time in continuing the offensive pressure, hitting a basket just seconds into the second.

Transylvania ramped up the defense in the second, causing a five minute scoring drought for the Engineers, but couldn't to capitalize on the opportunity as they were unable to generate a steady offense attack. With 10 minutes remaining in the second half, the Pioneers were only able to muster four points since halftime.

Transylvania's pressure held the Engineers to 27 points in the second, compared to 37 in the first. But, the deficit was too much for Transylvania to overcome in the remaining minutes.

Unable to make a dent in the Engineer lead, the Pioneers fell on the road, 66-39.

Transylvania (6-12, 4-7) heads home Wednesday to face conference opponent Earlham at 7:30 p.m. before hitting the road on a three-game trip to Manchester, Mount St. Joseph and Anderson.
