Calhoon, Chidester and Waltrip come up big for men's soccer in win over Capital

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Two first half goals propelled the Transylvania University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Capital University on Sunday. It was the Pioneers' third win of the season.

Goalkeeper Cody Waltrip was the highlight of the game for Transy, continuing his dominant stretch in the net that has seen him allow just three goals in the last five games. Waltrip recorded 10 saves on the day, stopping all but one shot on goal from Captial to carry the Pioneers to victory.

The Pioneers ripped off 12 shots in the match, putting five on target and scoring two of them. Midfielder Riley Calhoon started things early for Transy, netting his first goal of the year in just the fourth minute to give the Pioneers a one-goal advantage on an assist from midfielder Tyler Joy-Brandon.

Over the next 20 minutes Capital made run after run into the Transylvania defensive area and took several shots, including several challenging attempts but Waltrip held strong in the net to maintain the 1-0 lead.

Transylvania would get on the board again with just over 15 minutes to play in the first half on a goal from forward Blake Chidester. The Capital keeper came off his line and after the ball but Chidester was able to chip the ball over the top and into the back of the net for what would prove to be the deciding goal.

The Pioneers withstood a flurry of shots late in the half from Capital, taking their two-goal lead into the locker room after 45 minutes of play.

"We came out firing in the first half which gave us cushion for the rest of the game," said head coach Matt Vogel. "We could've scored a few more times but I'm glad we finally got a reward for how well we have been playing of late."

In the second half, Capital would continue to probe the Transy defense and take shots at the target but Waltrip continued to deter them and recorded save after save to keep the lead intact. With time winding down however, Capital got on the board with a goal after a Transylvania foul in the box led to a penalty kick.

Transylvania moves to 3-2-4 on the season with conference play looming ahead. The Pioneers return to action on Saturday with their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener against Manchester University.
