Pioneers Men's Soccer clinches HCAC No. 2 seed in season finale win

Box Score

Bluffton, Ohio –The Transylvania men's soccer team made use of a pair of first half goals from senior forward Blake Chidester to cruise to a 6-0 win over the Bluffton Beavers at the Sears Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The win propels Transylvania to a record of 12-2-3 overall, and 7-1-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Saturday victory marked the final game of the regular season for the Pioneers, sealing up the second seed in the standings for next week's HCAC Conference Tournament.

Transylvania's offense performed at an ultra-high level on Saturday afternoon, as they outshot Bluffton 30-6 throughout the game.

The Pioneers' first goal came just 13 minutes into the game when Chidester scored his team-high 10th goal of the season. In the 28th minute, Chidester struck again when he added the second goal of the game off an assist from freshman midfielder Caswell Fuller.

The Pioneers came out of the intermission looking to put the game beyond reach from the Beavers. Senior midfielder Freddie Siegelman scored twice within a four-minute span to make the score 4-0 in favor of Transylvania.

Freshman midfielder Cubaka Mutayongwa added Transylvania's fifth goal of the day in the 63rd minute for a 5-0 lead. The goal was Mutayongwa's second of his career.

The Pioneers capped off their big day when freshman forward Blake Shelton scored his first career goal as a Pioneer in the 74th minute.

The trio of Transylvania goalkeepers Chandler Gaunce, Drew Grisham, and Ryan Hughes combined to earn the shutout for the Pioneers.

Next up, the Pioneers will turn their attention to the HCAC conference tournament. Today's win coupled with a Hanover loss means that Transylvania will host the first round of the tournament in Lexington against the third-seeded Panthers.

Transylvania will face the Hanover Panthers this coming Wednesday night, November 2, in what promises to be an epic showdown between two great teams. Transylvania defeated Hanover earlier in the season 1-0 in what was a thrilling contest. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. start at Pat Deacon Stadium.
