Pioneers Men's Soccer and Mt. St. Joseph forge tie at home

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's soccer team was looking to earn its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season, but goals were difficult to come by and the Pioneers were forced to accept a 1-1 tie with the visiting Mount St. Joseph Lions on Wednesday night at Pat Deacon Stadium.

The Pioneers dominated the game offensively as they outshot the Yellow Jackets 14 to 4. Transylvania got big performances from senior forward Blake Chidester, who scored the Pioneers' only goal in the game, and junior midfielder Riley Calhoon, who recorded three shots on a goal and an assist in the game.

The first half proved to be a frustrating one for the Pioneers, as they failed to score despite applying constant pressure to the Lions goalkeeper. In the first half, Transylvania outshot Mt. St. Joseph 12-1.

The last fifteen minutes of the first half would prove to be much more physical than the first thirty minutes. However, the Pioneers showed capable of making more scoring opportunities for themselves during this fifteen-minute window.

In the second half, the Lions did a better job of finding their offensive touch, and turning touches into shots. The disparity in shots taken fell sharply in the second half of the game.

With regulation time winding down, the Pioneers continually found openings in which to take shots on the Lions goalkeeper. But the Lions held firm and the game moved into overtime.

The overtime period was full of dramatic plays and scoring opportunities. An especially close shot came when a beautiful crossing pass was made to freshman forward Charlie Wend, who was crashing towards the goal. However, the Mt. St. Joseph goalkeeper made a spectacular save, and the Pioneers had to be content with a second overtime.

The Pioneers' final chance to pull away came with 39 seconds left in the second overtime. Calhoon was fouled, which drew a yellow card against the Lions, creating a free kick for the junior just inside the 50- yard line. Calhoon's kick drifted to the front of the goal mouth and circulated before the defense were finally able to clear it away.

Next up for the Pioneers is a home game against the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday, October 8. The game is set for a 3:30 pm start from Pat Deacon Stadium.
