Box Score Clermont, FL. – The Transylvania University women's softball team completed their week of softball action at the Spring Games with a dominating 10-1 performance over the Allegheny Gators of Pennsylvania on Saturday.
The Pioneers wrapped up the week with a 6-5 showing to start their season as they head back towards the Bluegrass. A second afternoon game scheduled against Wisconsin-Stevens Point was rained out and will not be rescheduled.
The start provides a strong boost for the Pios, who posted a 4-7 showing at last year's season opening journey to the Spring Games.
Freshman third baseman Shelby Grambrell stood strong behind the plate against Allegheny, scoring four runs on three hits for the Pioneers.
Gambrell singled in the first inning and advanced to second base on a groundout to third by junior shortstop Shelby Bailey. Gambrell then proceeded to third on a groundout to second base by junior in-fielder Krista DeBurger. Gambrell then rung up her first run for Transylvania on an ensuing infield single by Shelbi Poehlein.
The Owenton, Kentucky native singled again in the third and stole second before reaching third base on a single by junior shortstop Shelby Bailey. A Gators' infield error allowed Gambrell to make her way home again to grow Transy's lead to 3-0.
During the fourth, Gambrell was hit by a pitch and again stole second. She was then sent to third on a fielder's choice and was brought home after senior first baseman Katie Hulsman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Finally, in the fifth inning, the freshman singled to center field and stole second a third time. Gambrell eventually scored her fourth run on a double to left center by Bailey.
Freshman second baseman Brittany Mumford had a big day at the ballpark for the Pioneers as well, scoring three of Transylvania's ten runs.
Mumford singled once to shortstop, once to center field, and was walked to earn her scoring opportunities. The freshman also added two stolen bases in stealing second and home plate after being walked in the top of the fifth inning.
Bailey and Poehlein also contributed to the double-digit runs for Transylvania, with Bailey scoring twice and Poehlein once.
Freshman pitcher Jenna Stiles faced a total of 20 Allegheny batters through five innings, throwing 43 strikes on 81 pitches while yielding just three hits and one run to the Gators.
After achieving a 2-1 advantage in the first inning, the Pioneers scored three in the third, two more in the fourth, and three in the fifth to hit a 10-1 lead, which would stand as the final.
By virtue of their five-inning victory, the Pioneers won all six of their games in Florida in shortened innings. Transylvania's six wins have all been by eight wins or more, while four of their five losses have come in one-run games.
Upon their arrival back to Lexington, the Pios will prepare to play a double-header with Trine University in Angola, Indiana this Friday at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
