Box Score 2 Lexington, KY – In a series where runs were hard to come by, the Transylvania baseball team took two out of three games against the Anderson Ravens this weekend at Marquard Field.
Following a 5-4 win yesterday by Transylvania, the Pioneers rallied back to win Game One of Saturday's doubleheader over Anderson, 3 to 1. Anderson salvaged the final game of the series by taking Game Two, 3-2 in 10 innings.
The Pioneers used a monster game from pitcher Adam Boone to roll to a 3-1 victory in the opening game Saturday. Handed the Game Two start, Boone took the ball and ran with it on this day as he struck out 11 Anderson batters and issued zero walks.
Boone was unforgivably efficient against the Anderson lineup as he worked a complete-game three-hitter on the way to Transylvania's 10th Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory of the year and the 14th of the season, one better than last year's overall total.
Anderson scored their lone run of Saturday's opening game in the first inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch that advanced Augdan Wilson to second base with a timely RBI single from Nathan Will for a 1-0 lead. Anderson's lead held for the next 5 ½ innings before Transylvania finally delivered the tying run in the bottom of the sixth.
With first baseman Taylor Henley aboard at second base after a two-out double, catcher Blake Hart smacked a hit through the right side of the infield to score Henley and break Transylvania's scoring drought.
The Pioneers continued their momentum in the ensuing seventh inning and took advantage of a series of Anderson miscues. Trey Simpson drew a one-out walk and stole second base. A flyout by Aaron Johnson moved Simpson to third base. Jared Williams then became the second batter over the last three to be walked, forcing an Anderson pitching change.
With Connor Blevins up to bat, a slew of erratic pitches put Transylvania in the driver's seat as a wild pitch got away from the Ravens catcher allowing Simpson to score from third for a 2-1 lead. Williams moved to third on the play as well, which proved significant on the next at-bat. Blevins fought through an at-bat to draw another walk in the inning to put men on the corners for Transy.
Anderson then struck out Kody Ross, which would've been the final out of the inning, but the strike three pitch bounced away from Anderson catcher Brooks Bireley that allowed Ross to get to first base and Williams to score from third.
Continuing his performance under pressure, Boone closed out the final two innings, retiring six of the final seven batters he faced to grab the complete game win for the Pioneers.
Hart stood out in the first game with a 2-for-3 day including a double and one RBI in the effort. Rogers had a triple for the Pioneers in the contest.
Game Two of the doubleheader featured a start by senior Trey Simpson on the mound for the Pioneers. Like Boone, Simpson allowed an early run before settling into a groove. Two early hits in the top of the first inning provided Anderson with an RBI opportunity, one which second baseman Augdan Wilson took advantage of for Anderson. His RBI brought in Isaac Turner for a 1-0 lead.
After hacking away at starting pitcher Ben Yoder, Transylvania finally made a dent in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Rex Rogers delivered a double to left field and the next batter Connor Blevins was hit by a pitch to put two men on for the Pioneers.
Kody Ross powered through a single to score Rogers and the game was tied at 1-1. Anderson quickly made their retort in the next inning off an RBI single by Will of Anderson to retake the lead at 2 to 1.
Like the first game, Transylvania took advantage of some well-timed mistakes by Anderson late in the game to knot things up again. In the bottom of the seventh, a walk by Rogers and a double from Ross put two men in scoring position with one out. After a Henley strikeout, a wild pitch that got away from Anderson pitcher Lane Hanzel provided an open corridor for Rogers to score and tie the game at two-all.
The Pioneers and Ravens each took turns at bat over the eighth and ninth innings but could not gain the upper hand and the game headed to extra innings.
The tenth inning saw the breakthrough moment for Anderson as a walk and a single set up a go-ahead run with one out. Branton Sanders's single brought home Eric Bowling. Closing pitcher Kameron Schwartz closed out the innings, but Anderson retired the Transy side in the bottom of the tenth to close out the game with the crucial win.
Rex Rogers went 2-for-3 in the second game of the day with two walks, while Ross, Henley, and Daniel Seitzinger also each tallied two runs apiece. Anderson took the win from the Pioneers despite being outhit, 9 to 8 in the second game of the day.
Transylvania moved to 14-14 overall, and 10-6 in HCAC play after the weekend series. Anderson improved to 10-16 and 7-7 after the second game of Saturday.
By taking two out of three games against Anderson this weekend combined with two losses on Saturday by Earlham, the Pioneers have drawn even with the Quakers for second place in the HCAC standings.
The Pioneers now pause for finals week before getting back on the road to take on Manchester in a pivotal three-game series beginning Friday, April 22 at 4:15 PM. Transylvania currently sits a half-game ahead of Manchester for second-place in the HCAC standings.
