Transylvania men's soccer moves to 14-1 with domination of Earlham

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's soccer team turned in an offensively dominant performance, defeating the Earlham College Quakers 5-0 at Pat Deacon Stadium on Wednesday night.

With the win, Transylvania's record moves to 14-1 overall and 7-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with just one game remaining in the regular season.

The Pioneers took control of the game early when a setup pass from senior midfielder Riley Calhoon found the foot of sophomore forward Charlie Wend, who put a shot past the Quaker goalkeeper just ten minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead.

Nine minutes later, sophomore midfielder Jason Murillo used some fancy footwork to free himself and blast a shot into the back of the net, extending the Transylvania lead to 2-0.

At the 26-minute mark of the first half, a pass from sophomore midfielder Caswell Fuller led to the first career goal for freshman defender Zach Hill. Hill's score spotted the Pioneers a 3-0 lead that they would be content to take into the halftime break.

Just one minute into the second half, Calhoon scored to extend the Pioneers lead to 4-0. The goal also extended Calhoon's HCAC-leading goal total to 14.

Capping off the scoring efforts for the Pioneers was freshman midfielder Garrett Dean, who recorded his first career goal when he volleyed a loose ball out of midair and put it over the Earlham goalkeeper's shoulder, extending the final tally to 5-0 in favor of the home team.

The Transylvania defense continued its suffocating ways as the Quakers were only able to muster one shot on goal throughout the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Drew Grisham collected the win, moving his record to 12-1 on the season. The shutout victory was the Pioneers'10th of the season.

Up next, the Pioneers will wrap up the regular season as they face the Bluffton University Beavers on Saturday, October 28. First touch between the Pioneers and Beavers is set for 3:30 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium following Senior Day celebrations for the Pioneers.
