Pioneers baseball loses footing late against Rose-Hulman

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team showed promise early before eventually falling to the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers by the score of 7-2 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of their weekend series at Marquard Field.

Freshman pitcher Robert Young took the mound for the Pioneers, and scattered nine hits over seven innings of work, while recording three strikeouts. Young's day was highlighted by a streak of 13 straight batters retired between the third and seventh innings.

The Pioneers were led on offense by junior Blake Hart, who scored two runs while batting 2-for-4 in the loss.

The game offered little scoring over the first several innings, as a lone run from the Fightin' Engineers was the only score in the first four innings.

The Pioneers were able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the fifth, as Hart reached base and then advanced to third on a pair of Rose-Hulman errors, later scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

The game would remained tied until the top of the seventh inning when the Fightin' Engineers turned four hits into four runs to recaptured the lead at 5-1.

Transylvania came to life in the bottom half of the eighth inning, as Hart, Taylor Henley, and David McAnelly each singled, loading the bases with no outs. However, the Rose-Hulman defense held, and the Pioneers were only able to push one run across, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

With the Transylvania offense stalling, the Fightin' Engineers added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning, raising the final score to 7-2 in favor of Rose-Hulman.

With the loss, Transylvania's record now stands at 10-15 overall, and 5-7 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Up next, the Pioneers will travel to face the Hanover College Panthers on Tuesday night, April 11. First pitch between the Pioneers and the Panthers is set for 4:00 p.m. at K.T. Young Ballpark in Hanover, Indiana.
