Transylvania baseball finds offensive answers late to blast past John Carroll

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team racked up 13 hits and pulled away late against the John Carroll University Blue Streaks for a 6-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Marquard Field.

After John Carroll tied the Pioneers at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning, the Pioneers scored five runs in the next two innings to complete its third win in four games on the weekend.

Transylvania improved to 7-8 on the year while John Carroll dropped to 8-6.

Six different pitchers took the bump for Transy on Sunday with sophomore reliever Collin Johnson earning the win for the Pioneers. All six pitchers combined for eight strikeouts and scattered seven hits over nine innings.

Adjacently, six different batters each gathered two hits for the Pioneers in Sunday's victory. Freshman infielder Hudson Chastain went 2-for-3 with a game-high three RBIs.

Transylvania plated the first run in the third inning on Chastain's first RBI of the day, a single that drove in junior infielder Jason Pastoor for a 1-0 lead.

John Carroll used a sacrifice fly RBI to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning, but the Blue Streaks stranded two runners to leave the inning unfinished.

In the bottom of the inning, Transylvania reached back for the lead as sophomore outfielder Riley Willbur delivered a double into left field that scored sophomore infielder Austin Butts to push Transylvania in front, 2-1.

In the ensuing at-bat, senior infielder Jared Williams scored Willbur on a base hit to put the Pioneers ahead 3-1.

Transylvania accelerated its offensive output in the bottom of the seventh as Chastain delivered a two-run single for a 5-1 advantage, and Butts smacked a double to score Chastain for a 6-1 lead.

JCU collected one final run in the top of the ninth inning but freshman pitcher Evan Patrick came up with a game-ending strikeout to secure the win for Transylvania.

The Pioneers are next in action on Saturday, March 24 as they host Depauw University for a three-game series. Transylvania is scheduled to host Depauw at 12:00 noon for a Saturday doubleheader.
