Transylvania wins home opener at Whitaker Bank Ballpark over #12 Denison with walk-off RBI from Chastain

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team opened up the doors at its new home on Saturday with an indelible moment, defeating the No. 12 Denison University Big Red 6-5 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark on a walk-off RBI single from Hudson Chastain.

After the notable announcement made in the offseason that the Pioneers would play closer to campus and make the move from Marquard Field to Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the minor league Single-A Lexington Legends club, the Transylvania baseball team finally got to play a home game on Saturday at its new ballpark.

Transylvania validated the wait, erasing two deficits against the nationally-ranked Big Red to set up the game-winning moment by the junior Chastain in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Pioneers improved to 2-2 on the season and claimed its second win against a top-25 ranked team with Saturday's scintillating victory.

Transylvania has opened up the season playing against five nationally-ranked teams at the time of competition while all six of its opponents have made an appearance in the D3Baseball Top 25 for at least one week in the 2020 campaign.

Transylvania jumped out in front in the bottom of the first when TJ Keck drove in Chastain, who reached on a walk, and Devyn Wilson-Cowan, who led off with a single and later stole second, for a 2-0 Pioneer upper hand.

Denison quickly extinguished its deficit in the ensuing frame as three Big Red hitters reached base consecutively with one away to load the bases. Denison's Cam Farren was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 2-1 Pioneer lead while a two-out single later in the inning score two more to put the Big Red ahead at 3-2.

Trey Medford tied up the action at 3-all in the bottom of the third on a two-out single that drove in Riley Willbur. Denison later climbed up on top with a 5-3 advantage via a two-run fifth inning.

The Pioneers had the final word with three unanswered runs beginning in the pivotal seventh inning. Henry Molloy led off with a base hit and moved to second on a wild pitch. Wilson-Cowan was then plunked to put two Pioneers on the base paths.

With no outs, Willbur obliged to the clutch occasion, hitting a liner into centerfield to score Molloy and advance Wilson-Cowan to third. On the next at-bat, Chastain scored Wilson on an RBI groundout to tie up the game at 5-5.

Transylvania quickly seized the moment in the bottom of the ninth on a lead-off single from Wilson-Cowan and a walk drawn by Willbur. With the game on the line, Chastain speared a base hit to left field to drive home Wilson-Cowan for the Pioneers' second win of the year.

Transylvania registered 13 hits to eight for Denison. Wilson-Cowan, Willbur, Medford, TJ Keck, and Parker Tuszynski each had two hits apiece while Keck and Lopiccolo smacked doubles.

Collin Johnson claimed the win for the Pioneers collecting the final five outs of the afternoon: the senior brought the eighth inning to an abrupt close on a double play and retiring the side in the top of ninth, two on strikeouts. Four Pioneers took the hill on Saturday and combined for 11 strikeouts with Ashton Plymale tallying a career-high six K's.

Transylvania returns to action tomorrow at Whitaker Bank Ballpark for a doubleheader to close out the weekend with Denison. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
