Transylvania women's tennis picks up seventh straight victory with 6-2 win over Covenant

Lookout Mountain, Ga. – The Transylvania women's tennis team battled to a 6-3 victory over the Covenant College Scots at the Covenant Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The victory is the seventh straight for Transylvania, and improves the Pioneers' record to 13-3 on the season, while Covenant falls to 3-5.

Trailing the Scots 2-1 following doubles play, the Pioneers came storming back to win five of six singles matches to claim the 6-3 overall match victory.

The Pioneers' lone win in doubles' action came via the duo of Sheila Cetina and Merrick Irwin, who claimed an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

In singles play, the Pioneers claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles via Cetina, and picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win by Jessica Burton at No. 3 singles.

After a win by Covenant at No. 1 singles, Transylvania wrapped up the match with victories from Irwin, Alyssa Igyarto, and Christina Duvall at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles respectively.

"I am really proud of the way the girls competed against a tough team on a chilly day," commented Transylvania head coach Bill Carey. "They fought and battled every step of the way. Being down after doubles, it took every ounce of energy and a great team effort to get this win. They did a great job today!"

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow morning for day two of their trek through Georgia. Transylvania will face off with the Berry College Vikings at the Rome Tennis Center. The match is set for an 11:00 a.m. start.
