Morehead, Ky. – The Transylvania men's basketball team paused their regular season with an exhibition matchup against the Division I Morehead State University Eagles on Thursday night, with the Eagles prevailing 84-59 at Johnson Arena.
Squaring off last season in two regular season games as part of a condensed schedule due to the pandemic, the Pioneers took on Morehead State in an exhibition game for the visitors in this year's slate.
Morehead let the ball fly early, using a three-point barrage to build a 22-5 advantage against the Pioneers. The Pioneers settled into a rhythm behind a three-pointer from Ethan Hudson and a close-range shot by Luke Schroeder.
Morehead State stretched its advantage to 32-12 with six and a half minutes to go in the first period, but Transylvania displayed its resilience and versatility, unveiling a 14-0 run which included nine straight points from Colby Napier. The freshman Napier scored all 14 of his points in the first half, nailing three triples along the way. The Eagles ended the run with a minute remaining in the half, but Napier found the cup again with a runner to cut Transy's deficit to 35-28 at the half.
The Eagles opened the second half on a 6-0 run and used consistent shooting to pull away from the Pioneers. Zach Larimore scored six of his 10 points early in the second half on a pair of treys, but Morehead State continue to piece together big runs to secure the win.
Nine different Pioneers had at least one assist in the contest. Transylvania finished the night shooting 47 percent from three-point range on 8 of 17 conversions, but the Eagles were doubly as true from outside on Thursday, nailing 16 of 35 three-pointers at a 46 percent clip.
The Pioneers will resume regular-season play on Saturday with their home opener against the Westminster (Pa.) College Eagles in Lexington. The teams square off at 2:00 p.m. at the Beck Center.
