Transylvania women's lacrosse comes up short at Sewanee in first road game of season

Sewanee, Tenn. – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team picked up a 12-7 loss to the Sewanee Tigers at Puett Field on Friday evening.

Courtney Pontious led the Pioneers' offense with three goals and two draw controls while Salem Carlow added two goals, collected five draw controls, and scooped up two ground balls.

The Transylvania offense opened the game with a flurry of offensive production. Just four minutes into the game, Rachel Johnston delivered a scoring strike to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.

Then, less than a minute later, Pontious capitalized on a man-up opportunity to extend the Transylvania lead to 2-0. Carlow added a goal at the 23:51 mark to give the Pioneers a three-goal lead.

The Tigers came charging back to even the score at 3-3. However, Pontious responded for the Pioneers with two straight goals of her own for a first-half hat-trick to reclaim the lead for Transylvania.

Trailing Transylvania 5-3, the Sewanee offense came to life as the Tigers went on a five-goal scoring streak spanning the end of the first half and start of the second half.

Altogether, the Tigers scored six goals in the second period. After seizing control of the lead, the Sewanee defense held the Pioneers to a pair of goals from Carlow and Ysa Leon over the game's final minutes.

Abi Waldron picked up the loss in goal for Transylvania. The sophomore tallied four saves and collected eight ground balls on the night.

The loss drops Transylvania's record to 0-2 on the young season while the Tigers improve to 1-0.

The Pioneers now face a quick turnaround as they travel to Birmingham, Alabama, tomorrow for a matchup against the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers. Opening draw between the Pioneers and the Panthers is set for 1:00 p.m. Eastern time at General Krulak Stadium.
