Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team used a blistering second-half extended stretch to pull away from the Georgetown (Ky.) College Tigers, 11-7 on Monday night at Pat Deacon Stadium.
Transylvania transformed a one-goal lead early into the second half into an 11-6 lead over an approximately 20-minute stretch to move to 2-1 at home and 4-4 overall. Georgetown fell to 1-3 overall.
Salem Carlow led the Pioneers with a five-goal and two-assist night, reaching a half-trick with 2:04 to go in the first half in boosting the Pioneers to a 6-4 halftime lead.
Courtney Pontious picked up her seventh hat-trick in eight matches with four goals and two assists as the two Pioneer veterans steered Transylvania to the victory against its regional NAIA rivals.
Transylvania tussled with the Tigers in the first half as the match was up for grabs. Georgetown answered the night's opening goal from Carlow with two unanswered scores before Carlow and Pontious took turns finding the back of the net for a 3-2 Transy lead with 17 minutes and change remaining in the first half.
Georgetown tied up the game once again at 3-3 but Carlow found Pontious for her second goal of the game with 10:13 to go in the first half to put the Pioneers back in front at 4-3. Georgetown struck paydirt to tie the game at 4-4, but the Pioneers had the final word in the first half with two scores in the final three minutes of the half, courtesy of RJ Johnston and Carlow.
The Tigers were the first to strike in the second half, cutting the Transy advantage to 6-5 five minutes into the period, but the Pioneers would counter with their most suffocating stretch of the game to seize control.
Beginning with a goal from Carlow at the 20:54 mark of the second half, the Pioneers reeled off four straight goals and five of the next six scores in the match over a nearly 15-minute stretch to build an 11-6 lead. Transylvania held the Tigers scoreless for over 15 minutes to complete its signature performance.
Johnston added two goals, two ground balls, and one caused turnover. Mandi Rider led the Pioneers with five draw controls. Abi Waldron picked up the win in goal with five saves on the evening.
Transylvania returns to action on Wednesday, April 7 at the Mount St. Joseph University Lions in the 2021 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener. Opening draw is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Cincinnati, Ohio.
