Lexington, Ky. - Meeting for the first time in 2021, the Earlham College Quakers used a pair of early offensive boosts in both games to down the Transylvania Pioneers 10-5 in the first leg of Sunday's doubleheader at Legends Ballpark and 7-4 in the second game of the day.
Â
Earlham claimed the doubleheader on Sunday to move to 4-0 on the season while the Pioneers dropped to 1-2 overall.
Â
The Quakers began the day by peppering the scoreboard with a run in the first, second, and fourth innings to claim a 3-0 lead on starter
Evan Burnett. The Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth with a bases-loaded walk drawn by
Wade Lopiccolo to score
Hudson Chastain.
Â
Earlham's bats clicked with a three-run fifth inning and eventually gained a 10-1 advantage by the top of the seventh inning.
Â
The Pioneers responded in the bottom half of the frame as
Michael Blair led off with a single and Lopiccolo moved Blair over to second with an infield single.
Joshua Cain delivered a double off of the right field wall to bring home Blair and put the club in prime position with two runners in scoring position and zero outs.
Â
Matt Broadwater brought forth a stellar pinch-hitting display with his first career hit to score Lopiccolo and Pahl followed with an RBI single that scored Broadwater but Pahl was thrown out at second. Earlham found two immediate outs to stifle the Transy comeback and hold the lead at 10-5 for the final two innings.
Â
Broadwater went 2 for 2 with two singles, one run, and one RBI. Blair compiled an efficient afternoon at the plate going 2 for 3, with one run and one walk.
Burnett struck out six over 3 and 2/3 innings while surrendering three earned runs on five hits. Transylvania collected 10 hits and four walks in the opener.
Â
Behind a three-run inning in the first, the Quakers took an early lead over Transy in game two. Game two starter
Evan Hall shook off an early outburst by Earlham to work five innings, striking out two and yielding four earned runs on the day.
Â
Earlham doubled its lead in the fifth with a three-run output to eventually build a 7-0 lead over the Pioneers through six and a half innings.
Â
Â
Similar to the first leg, the Pioneer bats woke up in the seventh frame. After Lopiccolo led off with a walk and
Trent Pahl reached base,
Trent Youngblood laced a shot off of the right field wall, putting two runs on the board for the Pioneers and making the score 6-2 in favor of the Quakers.
Â
The Pioneers continued to battle as Pahl launched a two-run home run to left field which sparked a ninth inning charge. However, as darkness started to drape Legends Ballpark, the rally was stymied.
Â
Youngblood finished the game 2 for 4 with a single, double, two RBI, and also drew a hit by pitch.
Â
The Pioneers are slated for a doubleheader against the Manchester University Spartans on Saturday, March 13 at Legends Ballpark. First pitch for the opening game is set for 12:00 p.m.
