Wilson-Cowan provides pair of HR's, Transylvania baseball storms to sweep at Earlham

Richmond, Ind. –  Devyn Wilson-Cowan belted two home runs in a busy and efficient Sunday for the Transylvania baseball team, which soundly swept the Earlham College Quakers 15-0 in seven innings and 11-2 in five innings at Sadler Stadium.

Transylvania pelted Earlham to the tune of a 15-0 win in game one behind 15 team hits, supercharged by a 4 for 4 game at the plate by Wade Lopiccolo and a sterling complete-game shutout from freshman Robby Arnett on the mound.

The Pioneers roared to another early lead, punctuated by Wilson-Cowan's second home run of the day in the fourth inning to put game two out of reach.

With the Pioneers cruising and the rain driving in Richmond, game two was called after five innings as the Pioneers improved their record to 16-7 while Earlham dropped to 15-9.

Transylvania wasted no time in planting its stakes in Sunday's opener as Devyn Wilson-Cowan began the scoring for the Pioneers in the second inning with a two-out home run to left field, placing the Pioneers ahead for good.

The Pioneers put their stamp on the game in the third inning with a six-run explosion. After Trent Pahl led off the inning reaching base via an infielding error, the Pioneers speared four consecutive base hits. Hudson Chastain scored Pahl on an RBI single and Riley Willbur scored both Lopiccolo and Trent Youngblood on a two-run hit to left field, lifting the Pioneers to a 4-0 lead.

Nick Wade and Parker Tuszynski scored two more runners on RBIs to propel Transylvania to a 7-0 stronghold after three innings.

Transylvania tacked on three more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings behind a two-run single from Wade in the fourth and a two-run triple by Lopiccolo in the fifth, escorting the Pioneers comfortably ahead to a 13-0 lead.

Earlham could only muster three hits against Arnett over his seven strong innings of work as the freshman rang up eight Quakers at the plate, earning his first career win in shutout fashion.

Five Pioneers had multiple runs batted in and five players or more had two hits or more. Youngblood had a double while Pahl joined Lopiccolo in smacking a triple.

In game two, Transylvania made haste with a busy second inning and a five-run fourth inning. Michael Blair led off the second inning with a bases on balls and touched home plate on the ensuing at-bat as Wade hit a single and both players advanced on an error. The Pioneers loaded the bases and Pahl drew a bases-loaded walk. Youngblood hit an RBI single into right field for a 3-0 Pioneer lead after two.

Blair displayed his power with a solo home run in the top of the third to add a run to Transylvania's cushion to set the stage for the decisive fourth frame.

Youngblood led off the fourth with a base hit to centerfield and was the first Pioneer to score on a sacrifice fly RBI from Blair. Nick Wade followed with a two-run double into right field and Wilson-Cowan put a bow on the day with a two-run home run into centerfield to bring home Wade, forging a 9-2 Pioneer advantage.

The Pioneers completed the damage in the following inning as five different players drew walks to generate an additional two runs. Earlham was unable to answer against winning pitcher Jared Leuthart in the bottom of the fifth and the game was called as the rain grew increasingly torrential.

Leuthart worked the final three innings, striking out three and teaming with starting pitcher Collin Johnson for six combined strikeouts. The duo allowed only one earned run and four hits between them.

Youngblood went 3 for 3 with a walk and an RBI while Wade led all players with four RBI.

After Earlham won the first series of the season between the two teams in Lexington, all four games in the series thus far have been won by the road team. Chastain's hitting streak ended at 18 games in the Sunday sequel but the sophomore reached base twice on walks, continuing his season-long streak of reaching base in every game.

Transylvania is back in action on Wednesday, April 14 against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers in Lexington. The Pioneers and Engineers will play a single-game set at Legends Ballpark at 6:00 p.m.
