Franklin, Ind. – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team dominated from start to finish to beat the Franklin College Grizzles, 22-1 on Saturday morning.
The win improves the Pioneers' record to 8-4 on the season and 3-0 in Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference play while the Grizzles fall to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Pioneer offense bombarded the Grizzlies early in the game, taking nine shots on goal less than three minutes into the match.
Courtney Pontious bypassed the Grizzlies defenders and fired a shot by Franklin's goalkeeper to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead with 29:03 remaining in the first half. Transylvania's early blitz continued as
Salem Carlow extended the lead 2-0 less than a minute after the score from Pontious.
Lindy Walker quickly joined the scoring column and dished an assist to
Rachel Johnston which gave the Pioneers a quick 4-0 advantage. Transylvania's lead continued to grow off of goals from Carlow,
Abbey Peterson and a pair of deliveries from
Mandi Rider as the Pioneers enjoyed an 8-0 lead.
Franklin notched its first goal of the match on a shot by Riddle. Peterson responded with a score of her own and the Pioneers led 9-1 with 9:58 left in the first half.
Rider and Pontious added extra insurance to the Pioneer lead, providing Transylvania with a halftime cushion of 12-1.
Transylvania completely dominated the first half on both sides of the ball, forcing 15 turnovers and manifesting 27 shots on goal compared to two for Franklin.
The halftime break did not slow the Pioneers down as Johnston and Pontious added goals early in the second half, growing Transylvania's advantage to 14-1 with 28:05 left in the match.
The Pioneers found another chance to add to their advantage when Pontious scrambled around and found a cutting Carlow, who found the back of the net for her third goal of the day, raising the Pioneer lead to 15-1 with 20:32 remaining.
The Pioneers added scores late in the match from Carlow, Peterson,
Eve Fox,
Vianne Koshoffer,
Ysa Leon and two more from
Linley Dawson on the way to the 22-1 victory.
Transylvania displayed a well-balance offense as 10 different Pioneers finished the day with at least one goal. The Pioneers outshot the Grizzlies 54-9 and forced 21 turnovers.
Abi Waldron recorded four saves in 30 minutes of action.
The Pioneers return to play on April 24 at Pat Deacon Stadium, hosting the Anderson University Ravens in the regular-season finale. First draw is set for 5:00 p.m. in Lexington.
