Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's soccer team capitalized with two first-half goals to earn its first win of the season in a 2-1 victory against the Alma College Scots at Pat Deacon Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win moves the Pioneers to 1-3-1 on the season while the loss drops the Scots to 1-4 on the year.
The Pioneers jumped on the Scots early as
Mitchell Crispin weaved through defenders on the left side of the pitch. As the junior entered the penalty area, Crispin crossed a ball to
Alec Coomes, who calmly slotted the ball into the net to earn a 1-0 lead in the 11
th minute.
Alma replied with pressure as
Gino Arena made a crucial save in the 16
th minute in his first start of the season for the Pioneers. Transylvania doubled its lead in the 45
th minute as
Drew Harrod laced a shot from the top of the penalty area that deflected off an Alma defender and found the back of the net seconds before the halftime whistle.
The Scots would not roll over, showing off their resolve throughout the second half. In the 60
th minute, goalkeeper
Cade Terry, who was subbed on at halftime, was forced to make a diving save to preserve the two-goal lead. The Scots found their first goal in the 74
th minute to cut the lead in half and put pressure on the Pioneers to close.
In the concluding stages of the match, Alma nearly equalized on a shot that was tracking for the top left corner of the net. Terry stood strong and made an acrobatic save with 30 seconds remaining on the clock to close out the 2-1 win for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers hit the road for their next fixture to take on the Berea College Mountaineers on Wednesday, September 15
th. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
