Lexington, Ky. – Simon Smith and Jaylan Green each registered new personal highs in scoring to lead the Transylvania men's basketball team to a runaway 85-64 win over the Manchester University Spartans on Wednesday afternoon at the Beck Center.
Smith scored 14 of his career-high 17 points in the first half while Green scored nine of his career-best 15 points in the second half as the Pioneers broke open a four-point halftime lead to win by 21 points.
Transylvania improved to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while Manchester dropped to 6-5 in the conference standings and 7-11 overall.
Smith found his touch early in the post to boost Transy to an 11-7 lead. Manchester rallied to tie back the action at 15-15 with 12:00 to go in the first half but the Pioneers continued crisp ball movement to retake the lead.
Smith and Green conspired to ignite a half-closing 12-3 Pioneer run to overtake the Spartans at the break for a 37-33 advantage.
Transylvania's offense heated up in the second half as the home team shot better than 59 percent from the field, compared to 40 percent shooting by the Spartans. Colby Napier drained a three-pointer early in the second half to kickstart a 9-2 Transy run for a 13-point lead. The Pioneers continued their consistency and aggression deep into the second half as Zach Larimore scored five straight points and Green followed with a triple to put the Pioneers in winning position with a 75-58 lead at the 4:22 mark of the second half.
Hunter Penn tallied his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds off 7 for 10 shooting from the field.
Smith finished the game with 17 points, seven rebounds, connecting on 7 of 12 field goals and 3 of 4 three-point attempts. Green poured in his 15 points on 7 for 11 shooting from the field to go with four rebounds.
The Pioneers swarmed the Spartans on the boards, outrebounding Manchester 44 to 25.
Transylvania continues its homestand on Saturday, January 29, playing host to the Bluffton University Beavers at the Beck Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
