Transylvania men's lacrosse fall to Muhlenberg, move to 5-1 on season

3/14/2022 5:22:00 PM

Box Score Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's lacrosse team dropped their first game of the season as they were defeated by the Muhlenberg College Mules 17-8 on Monday at Pat Deacon Stadium.

The Mules came out on a mission, scoring 41 seconds into the contest, and notching another five minutes later to go ahead 2-0. Transylvania made adjusted and fought right back, as Andrew Hamill buried one just one minute after the Mules second tally, to cut the deficit in half. He wasn't done there, as less than two minutes later Hamill scored an electric diving goal, and suddenly the game was tied 2-2.

Muhlenberg closed out the first quarter with a statement, as they scored four unassisted to go up 6-2 at the end of the period. They tacked on two more to start the second quarter, until Dalton Hubbs sniped one home to make it an 8-3 game. The teams then traded goals to close out the half, as Muhlenberg went up 9-3 at the 4:00 mark, before a Tai Stormont goal 50 seconds later. The Mules found the back of the net again shortly after, going into the half up 10-4.

Faced with a sizeable deficit, the Pioneers surrendered three more goals to fall behind 13-4, to the skilled Mule attack. Will Warner found an answer at the 7:10 mark, and Kayd Aquino backed it up with a goal of his own just over two minutes later. Transylvania started to find their stride, but unfortunately for them, Muhlenberg scored 40 seconds later, and found another with just 3 seconds left in the third, to build a 15-6 lead with a quarter to go.

The Mules took advantage of a man-up opportunity and scored the first goal of the fourth, making it a 16-6 contest. The Pioneers kept fighting and Hubbs scored his second of the afternoon at the 6:18 mark. Aquino then snuck one in on a nice bouncing shot just under two minutes later, to cut into the deficit and make it 16-8. Muhlenberg responded with 3:19 to go, and it proved to be the final goal of the game, as the Mules won 17-8.

With the tough test against Muhlenberg out of the way, the 5-1 Pioneers look ahead to a road tilt at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio on Saturday March 19, and return home a week later. They will open conference play hosting Illinois Wesleyan University at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday March 26, with a 2:00 PM scheduled start.
