Transylvania baseball falls to Maryville College in Richmond

Richmond, Ky. - On Wednesday night, the Transylvania University baseball team took on the Scots of Maryville College from Maryville, Tennessee. The Pioneers came into the game fresh off of a shutout win on Tuesday night against Alfred State. The game was a low scoring affair, until it slipped away from the Pioneers in the later innings, as they lost 8-1.

Pitcher Robby Arnett took the hill for Transylvania, who got the day started off by striking out the first batter looking and flying out the next two, allowing no hits for the top half of the inning. For the bottom half of the inning the Pioneers were not able to score, ending the inning 0-0.

The Scots were the first to bring a run home in the top of the second but the Pioneers only allowed the one run before retiring the side. The Pios were unable to find any runs for their half of the inning and the game went into the third inning 1-0 Maryville leading.

After two scoreless innings, to start the bottom of the fifth the Pios got on base off of a hit to center field from Walter Munday. After the next two batters were walked for the Pioneers, the bases were loaded and Trent Pahl took advantage by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Munday and even the score at 1-1 and entering the sixth inning tied.

For the top of the sixth it was more of the same from Arnett as he only allowed one hit in the top half of the inning and kept the Scots at only one run for the game. The Pioneers went scoreless for their half of the inning as well, keeping the score at 1-1. In the top of the seventh the Pioneers made two pitching changes with Carter Atkinson and then Max Medley while Arnett's day at the mound was finished, allowing 5 hits in 6 innings while striking out 6 batters, and only one run allowed. In the seventh the Scots found home plate 5 times making the score 6-1.

To start the eighth inning, the Pioneers made another pitching change to bring in freshman Caleb Adams. He worked through the inning and kept the score at 6-1. However, the Pios were unable to cut into the deficit, and in the top of the ninth the Scots plated two more to go ahead 8-1, which proved to be the final score.

The Pioneers look to bounce back tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM against Alfred State in Florence, Kentucky at Y'alls Ballpark.
