Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania men's lacrosse team came up big in the closing minutes to defeat the Capital University Comets 13-10 at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday. The win makes the Pioneers 4-0 on the season.Â
In the first quarter both teams came out firing, scoring a total of 6 goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Transylvania came out with the first two goals of the game by Bryce Lowe and Dalton Hubbs, and goalie Topher Hays, making his first career start, made key saves to start. Capital was able to break through in the form of four unanswered goals, and the final seven minutes of the quarter went scoreless as neither team was able to find the back of the net.Â
Down 4-2, the Pioneers leaped out into the second quarter as Andrew Hamill scored just eight seconds into the period. Three minutes later Lowe got his second goal of the game to tie it up with 11:43 remaining in the half. Hamill was not done, as he buried two straight goals to secure his first half hat trick and give the Pios a two goal lead with eight minutes remaining in the half. Not even two minutes later the Pioneers scored once again, this time coming from freshman Ryan Geisler with an assist from Quinn Fox. The tally marked Geisler's first career goal. After a 5-0 run by Transylvania that also included some important saves by Hays, Capital finally answered with a goal coming at the 1:44 minute mark. Going into the halftime break the score was 7-5, Pioneers with the lead.Â
To start the fourth quarter the Pioneers scored almost immediately, at the 14:30 mark, courtesy of Peyton Bray. Down 8-5, Capital answered a few minutes later at the 10:38 mark to bring it back to a two goal game, and continued to battle back in the third period. With 1:36 remaining they tied the score at 8-8. The Pioneers refused to fall behind and with 50 seconds left in the third quarter, Kayd Aquino scored to give Transy a 9-8 lead.Â
Capital got the scoring started in the fourth with a game tying goal at the 11:50 mark. The game went scoreless for nearly 7 full minutes as both teams fought in a deadlock. Finally, Transylvania found a way to break the tie as Hamill scored his fourth goal of the game and put the Pios up one with 4:54 remaining. Capital established possession down the stretch trying to tie the game, but Lowe picked off a pass and went coast to coast in the blink of an eye, firing a laser past the Comets goaltender for a huge insurance goal, and his fourth of the day. The Pioneers held strong in the final minutes and ran out the clock to win 13-10.Â
Besides Hamill and Lowe's four goal games, freshman goalie Topher Hays takes the win in his first career start. The Pioneers move to 4-0 on the season and look ahead to hosting the DePauw University Tigers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Wednesday, March 9 with a 7:00 PM scheduled start.Â
