Box Score 4 Columbus, Ga. – The Transylvania softball team played a challenging 6 games over the weekend in the 2022 NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic, held in Columbus, Georgia, and went 3-3.
On Friday March 4, the Pioneers lost 5-4 to the MIT Engineers and defeated the Piedmont University Lions 6-5. On Saturday Transy lost 9-2 to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas, and beat the Manhattanville College Valiants 12-7. They concluded the weekend on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to the Alma College Scots and a 1-0 win over the Linfield University Wildcats.
Against MIT, the Engineers jumped out with five runs in the first two innings, but the Pioneers clamped down and turned the tide. Faced with an early 5-0 deficit, they chipped away as Emily Hestand, Taylor Senter, Kadi Weaver, and Becca Messing all touched home and Transy came within one in the fourth inning. In the sixth and seventh the Pioneers came close but were unable to drive in the tying run, losing 5-4.
Against Piedmont, Alyssa Nunn broke the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first, but the Lions found two runs to take the lead in the second. Transy tied it up in the third, and lead by first-year Ry'Ann Tharp, plated four more in the fourth to go up 6-2. Piedmont nearly mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, coming within one, but pitcher Carlee Jeter got through the jam to take the complete game win, 6-5.
Against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Schuck scored and a Nunn RBI single had the Pios out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. However, the Athenas broke through in the fourth to tie it up, and had a momentous fifth inning, scoring 7 runs. Transylvania notched several base runners in the later innings, but were unable to score, losing the game 9-2.
Against Manhattanville, the Pioneers responded after their tough loss earlier in the day. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, with Messing stealing home, and a Nunn RBI double. The Valiants plated 5 in the third to go up 5-3, but a Schuck single tied the game, and Transy tacked on 7 more unanswered. The Valiants hit a late home run, but Stella Wulker took care of business in the circle with the complete game win, 12-7 in favor of Transylvania. Schuck and Nunn finished with 3 RBI each.
Against Alma, Kinsey Smith touched home in the second to give Transy the 1-0 lead, but the Scots responded with two of their own in the third. From there it was a pitcher's duel, as Carlee Jeter kept the Scots at bay, but the Pioneers came up short in finding the tying run, losing the game 2-1.
Against Linfield, another defensive and pitchers duel took place to wrap up the weekend. Senter came home in the sixth to break a 0-0 deadlock. Marlee Woodward pitched an excellent scoreless game, with Jeter coming in for the final frame, and shutting down Linfield, as Transylvania won 1-0.
Sophomore pitcher Carlee Jeter was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Pioneers for her performance in the circle throughout the weekend.
With the six game weekend out of the way, the 6-3 Pioneers look ahead to a three-game series in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, starting Monday March 14, against the Covenant College Scots.
