Naperville, Ill. – The Transylvania men's lacrosse team notched their tenth win of the spring in a game against the Augustana College Vikings, 17-8. The team checks off another key victory and reaches the end of their first campaign in the CCIW conference, also their first year led by head coach Logan Otto.
It was a tightly played affair early on, as the Vikings got on the board first at the 10:53 mark. First-year attacker Matthew Clough buried one just over a minute later, but the tie was broken by the Vikings who took a 2-1 lead. Bryce Lowe put one on the board at the 5:01 mark to even things again, the first of more to come from the senior. Kayd Aquino and Andrew Hamill's goals built onto the lead as Transylvania started to establish control on the afternoon. Lowe added another with 2 minutes left in the quarter, and the Pioneers were up 5-2 after one.
Aquino scored less than a minute into the second, and first-year defender Malachi Spohn netted his first career goal just after. Down by five, the Vikings got two back but Quinn Fox's unassisted strike, and another from Clough, asserted Transylvania with a 9-4 halftime lead.
Just over a minute into the second half came Lowe's hat trick goal, but Augustana fought back with two of their own to make it a 10-6 score. Just six seconds after, Hamill ripped one home and started a run from Transy that would end up deciding the game. Tristan Ach and Dalton Hubbs each scored to make it 13-6 at the end of the third.
To nobody's surprise it was Lowe who scored first in the final quarter, marking his fourth of the day. With a large lead in hand, the clock wore on but the Pioneers were not done as Hamill completed the hat trick with 5:45 to go. For the third straight time in the afternoon the Vikings notched a pair of quick goals, their offense mostly coming in bursts, and it was a 15-8 game with just minutes to spare.
With 1:50 remaining Fox scored again to put a wrap on a five-point day from the senior, and Transylvania scored one final time before calling it a day, courtesy of Cameron Earley. The Pioneers took the win, 17-8.
Senior Peyton Bray had himself a day with 12 ground balls, and went 15-25 on faceoffs. Fellow senior AJ Teague also made a worthy impact with 7 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers. Goalie Connor Haney took the win with 13 saves in 56 minutes of action, and Topher Hays took the final 4 minutes on the day adding a save as well.
With the regular season now in the books, the Pioneers eagerly await the CCIW Tournament, as they look to make some more noise in their first year as a member of the conference. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday, May 6th, with location and exact schedule to be determined. Stay tuned on transysports.com and @TransySports on Twitter for further updates.
