LEXINGTON- The Transylvania Men's Soccer team moved to 5-6-5 on the season and 3-2-3 in HCAC play as the Pioneers faced the Franklin Grizzlies in the last regular season match of the season. Transy won in thrilling fashion, 1-0. This win moves Transy to a dominating 15-2-1 in program matches between the Pioneers and the Grizzlies. The Pioneers came into this game needing a win to host the first round of the HCAC Tournament.
This game didn't lack in any aspect as both teams played hard and aggressive early. Settling into the half the Pioneers and Grizzlies took a similar amount of shots, with Transy getting 7 compared to Franklins 8, but dominating in corner kicks 3-1.
The second half would be controlled by the Pioneers but see impressive defensive efforts on both sides with Transy getting off just 3 shots compared to Franklin's 1. This game we would see great communication from Nolan "Rex" Yantz as he earned another crucial win and shutout for the Pioneers.
This match wouldn't see a goal until well into the second half where after heated play, the Pios connected on a break as Cole Verela laced the Gus Dickman pass. The goal was the deciding factor as it gave Transy the win and home field advantage for the first round.
Transy will open the first round in HCAC playoffs facing off against Defiance College, where the two teams tied 1-1 in the previous matchup.
"I am very happy with this group and all they've overcome this season," Head Coach Ben Federici said. "It wasn't a pretty game tonight, Franklin made it tough on us, but we did enough to get the result. Now we move on to Saturday."
