Our Pioneers Baseball team had a full Sunday as they finished up their travel this weekend playing a doubleheader against Wittenberg.
In the first game Trasy and Wittenberg got off to a quick start with Wittenberg striking first scoring a run in the first inning, however followed by great field work to stall out the Tigers until the 4th inning where Transy was able to capitalize. Trent Youngblood stepped to the plate and hommered one out right to get the Pioneers on the scoring card earring Youngbloods first homerun of the season which is expected after hitting double digit homers last season.
Scoring picked up in the 6th inning as Schub and Younblood found themselves on base and in scoring possession. Trent Pahl was able to advance Schub to score with an RBI into left field followed by Henry Mitcham doubling RBI to send Youngblood home. This set the score at 3-4 in favor of the Tigers in this inning after Wittenberg was able to earn 3 of their own.
This ended the scoring run for the Pioneers in this game as they played great defense fielding the ball well with Henry Mitcham and Bryce Dreher on the same page recording most of the teams putouts. With the game ending 3-4 against the Pioneers we were able to take a lot away from the game showing the possibilities this team has on both ends to play tight games well fielding.
In the second game today the men faced Wittenberg University again, which didn't go as planned for the Pioneers either losing this game 5-17. Just like last game this one started off slow for the Pioneers letting up some runs early before settling in later in the game during the 5th inning. This is where Henry Mitcham continued his great weekend by earning his first homerun hitting the ball well past the left field.
From here on Wittenberg was able to run up the scoring category putting the game out of reach for the Pioneers even as they had a successful second wind coming in the form of 3 runs in the 6th. We saw 3 runs come in for the Pioneers with Youngblood sending Schub home with a double followed by an Austin Taylor homerun sending himself and Youngblood home. Inning ended 4-11 in favor of the Tigers. The 7th started with a great at bat for Bryce Dreher who hit a homerun out to left center field to end the scoring for the Pios today.
The Pioneers ending the day against the Tigers 5-17 solidified their weekend, however showed an immeasurable amount to learn from as a team. Great pitching might not have been represented on the scoreboard but Robby Arnett was able to settle in this weekend and show what he can produce from the mound.
After the game head coach Zack Getsee had this to say:
"Tough weekend for us. Disappointed with the results certainly. Saw some good things underneath however. We've got work to do on Tuesday."
The Pioneers can look forward to an extended home stay as they play their next three games at home against Wesminster College. The excitement that comes from a home Transy crowd is something our players are great at taking advantage of. The first game at home will be March 4th at 12 noon.
