Transy Baseball played in another double header today as the University of Chicago traveled down to Lexington to play the Pioneers at Wild Health Stadium. The Pioneers split the doubleheader with the Pioneers falling short of the comeback in game one 3-8 and bouncing back in game two 11-3.
The first game for the Pioneers was led by Connor Arnold on the mound where he pitched a strong game totaling 5 strikeouts, becoming his new season high, after facing 24 batters. The Pioneers had four stolen bases by four different Pio runner; Calvin Schubert, Griffin Hall, Trent Youngblood, and Riley Hill. The Pioneers were able to chip away at the Chicago lead in the seventh. Taylor was brought home from a Houston Manning hit giving Manning the RBI. Bryce Dreher was knocked in by a Braden Becker sacrifice fly. In the eith, Trent Youngblood doubled down the right field line, and advanced to third off an errant throw. Then, Austin Taylor put the ball in play to bring in Youngblood, but the Pioneers would come up short in the comeback.
In game two, Transy came out swinging in the bottom of the first. Youngblood started this game with a base hit back up the middle to start the bounce back. Griffin Hall took a hit by pitch, followed by a bunt single from Schubert to load the bases. With two outs, Bryce Dreher singled to right to pick up two RBI's and stole second base allowing Schubert to score. Houston Manning's single to right scored Dreher to earn the Pioneers the 4-0 lead going into the second.
In the bottom of the second, Braden Becker reached first on a walk setting up Youngblood for a perfectly placed bunt single. Griffin Hall laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt to advance both runners and set up the RBI opportunity for Schubert. Schubert capitalized with an RBI single through the left side to score Becker and advance Youngblood. Trent Pahl added a sacrifice fly to right to score Youngblood putting the Pioneers up 6-2.
The Pioneers were back on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a double steal by Schubert and Youngblood as Schubert rounded first on a walk and took second to give Youngblood the chance to take home and score. Schubert would score thanks to Pahl putting the ball in play down the third baseline forcing a Chicago error.
Schubert added another RBI in the bottom of the fifth with a single to left scoring Becker and setting up Hall to score as well.
Jacob Moberly had a solid outing, pitching four innings, collecting five strikeouts, a new career high for him. Brennan Perry earned the win with four strikeouts and no walks on 22 batters faced.
Offensively, the Pioneers had a couple of stellar performances on the day:
- Youngblood- 4-7 with a double, 3 walks, 3-3 SB, and 4 runs scored
- Schubert- 3-7, 2 RBI, a walk, 2-3 SB, and 3 runs scored
After the game Head Coach Zack Getsee had this to say:
"If we can find a way to win tomorrow then that'll be a good split. Their number one showed why he is a pre-season All American. I'm really proud of the way we bounced back. Big day tomorrow."
The Pioneers will play the University of Chicago again tomorrow, Sunday March 19th at Wild Health field. First pitch is at 12 noon so make sure to show out and support your Pios!
