Box Score Our Pioneers played yet another game this weekend finishing up the Westminster series by sweeping them, winning today's game 4-3. The weather was just as good as yesterday except today the ballpark had power and was running as usual. With the Pios riding high off of yesterday's wins the feeling from the dugout was palpable as Getsee was able to control the amount of fun and energy while also distilling disciplined play.
Freshman Luke Patton started the game off pitching for the Pioneers pitching the first 6 innings in his first career win. Patton held Westminster scoreless in the first 4 innings then only letting up 1 in the fifth until he retired in the 6th. Patton as a freshman played like a veteran not letting his pitches get away from him and making it tough for each batter.
Transylvania was able to score 1 run in both the first and second inning coming from a Phal RBI to send Austin Taylor home, then in the second, Dreher was able to send Griffin Hall home off of his RBI. From here the Pioneers fielded well even with Westminster base running well pressuring our pitcher to make the right plays to get us out of these situations. Westminster left a total of 11 people on base this game backing up the fantastic pitching and fielding efforts. Dreher and Schubert both batted well getting 2 hits a piece methodically putting runners in the right spots to put Westminster into tough decision making. After aggressive base running the Pios were able to sweep Westminster this whole weekend with Mitcham scoring the final run for the Pios after an errant pick off attempt. The Pios seal this weekend winning 4-3 and going 3-0 on Westminster.
After the win Head Coach Zack Getsee had this to say:
"It's always a good weekend when we sweep. I'm really proud of the way we've responded to the previous weekend."
Transylvania Baseball plays soon, away at Spalding University Tuesday March 7th at 6PM. As the season has just gotten into full swing, the Pioneers have shaped out their squad and look to make some noise not just in the HCAC but as a fun hard playing team. The roster is packed with the right amount of returning players and new freshman players to balance out a deadly team who can make games hard for any team.
