Though the day started with an inclement weather delay, it ended with a sweep for the Pioneers on Senior Day. The Pioneers honored #1 Joshua Cain, #18 Griffin Hall, #20 Evan Burnett, #29 Matthew Kirkland, #32 Quinn Bowring, #36 Chase Harvard, and #49 Conor Baxter.
Game one featured a complete game shutout gem from junior Matt Armstrong. Armstrong fanned 16 batters, only allowing two hits, and three baserunners through nine innings of work and 30 batters faced for the Pioneers.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Braden Becker sent a solo homerun to left-center for the 1-0 lead. The Pioneers added one more in the bottom of the eighth. With McAtee (pinch runner for Munday) and Youngblood aboard by walk and hit-by-pitch, Calvin Schubert sent a single through the left side to score McAtee for the 2-0 lead and final score.
In game two, the Quakers went up 2-0 in the top of the first, but the Pioneers answered with one in the bottom half. Youngblood singled to first, advanced on a wild pitch, moved to third on a nice sacrifice bunt from Zach Forner and then scored on another wild pitch.
The Pioneers added two more in the third to take the lead. Becker led off the inning with a single to left center, followed quickly by a two-run homerun by Youngblood to right field to go up 3-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, down 4-3, Schubert led off with a single to center, then stole second and advanced on a ball put in play on the right side by Henry Mitcham. Schubert then scored on a wild pitch before Austin Taylor singled to right field. Sophomore Bryce Dreher sent an RBI double to right center, giving the Pioneers the 5-4 lead into the ninth as the Pioneers went three up, three down to finish off the sweep. Pitching efforts came from Riley Hill, Ty Conner, Gabe Dillard, Kaden Hill, and were finished off by Trent Youngblood for the win.
With the sweep, Transylvania takes the number two seed into the HCAC Tournament in Kokomo this week. They will play the higher seed remaining from Game 1 (#3 Bluffton vs. #6 Manchester) and Game 2 (#4 Rose-Hulman vs. Anderson) at 7:45 pm Thursday night.
