Pioneers Score In Final Seconds In Thrilling Victory

LEXINGTON, KY - The Transylvania University Pioneers secured their second straight victory in thrilling fashion on Thursday, defeating Earlham 1-0. The victory marks the second consecutive NCAC win for Transy. 



After a defensively focused first period for both teams, the second period provided scoring opportunities for both teams. Isabelle Stuckey's shot was saved by Earlham's Ainsley Kemp. Caroline Seaward's shot minutes later was also deflected by Kemp. In the closing moments of the first half, Maddy Morgan would find her first shot of the evening, hitting the post. Stuckey would find the final look of the half, landing wide with less than two minutes remaining. 

In the third period, Transy would take six shots at Earlham, but couldn't find the mark. Sophia Sparks would find the last shot of the third period, with less than a minute and a half remaining, landing wide after a penalty corner. As the fourth period began, Earlham's Alice Bucenec would find a shot on goal, saved by Transy's Libby Bringard. With less than twenty seconds remaining, Sophia Sparks would take the final penalty corner of the evening for Transy, scoring on an assist from Morgan, with 12.4 seconds remaining. 

The last second goal from Sparks secured the victory for Transy, 1-0.

"This was a great team win tonight," said Head Coach Natalie Hernandez. "This is huge for our program, our kids are making program history and we are just starting to find our groove. They played well tonight and I am super proud of them, we're excited for the future of field hockey at Transy!"

Up next for the Pioneers is a matchup with NCAC conference member Wittenberg University at Pat Deacon Stadium on Tuesday, October 8th, at 7 p.m. Transy will also host another NCAC matchup with Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday, October 11th, at 7 p.m.
