ST. LOUIS, MO - Transylvania battled to the finish against Wisconsin-Lutheran on Friday, but fell short 73-65.
Sadie Wurth tallied 15 points, including a perfect four three point field goals on four attempts to lead the Pioneers in scoring.
Riley Flinn added 11 points and nine rebounds, while
Sierra Kemelgor and
McLain Murphy each added ten points.Â
A fast break lay up for Flinn cut the deficit to 55-61 for the Pioneers with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Emilie Teall's rebound led to another Pioneer basket with
Makya Grinter to cut the lead to four with just under five minutes remaining. A three point field goal and a trip to the free throw line would extend the Wisconsin-Lutheran lead 66-57 before Wurth's three point field goal cut the lead to 66-60. With 01:36 remaining Wurth would go to the free throw line and knock down three free throws after being fouled on a three point attempt to trim the deficit to 66-63. Late free throws would push the lead for Wisconsin-Lutheran as
McLain Murphy's fast break would be the final basket for the Pioneers with five seconds remaining in the game, Wisconsin-Lutheran would score two free throws for a final score of 73-65.Â
Transylvania out performed Wisconsin-Lutheran in several categories, including second chance points (12-3), points in the paint (30-22) and fast break points (15-12).Â
The bracket is now set for the final day of the McWilliams Classic, as the Pioneers will take on Lyon on Saturday at 3 p.m. Lyon battled with host Washington University - St. Louis, falling to WashU 119-49.Â
