CINCINNATI, OHIO - Transylvania University traveled to Cincinnati to earn their second Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) win of the week, defeating Mount St. Joseph 67-62.Â
The Pioneers were led by
Colby Napier's 19 points with five three-point field goals.
Dakota Capps added another strong performance for Transylvania, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Hunter Penn (11 points, eight rebounds) and
Ian Reesor (nine points, four rebounds) helped highlight the Pioneer offense.Â
The Pioneers started with a 7-2 run, but MSJ would respond with an offensive push of their own, regaining the lead and extending to a 28-17 advantage with under four minutes remaining in the first half. Baskets from
Brandon Rowe,
Colby Napier and free throws from
Ian Reesor and
Dakota Capps would help the Pioneers rally late in the half, they carried a three point deficit into the half.Â
Dakota Capps knocked down a jump shot to cut the lead to three, 38-35, with 15:16 remaining. Timely baskets helped the Pioneers stay even with MSJ,
Colby Napier's three-point field goal and
Hunter Penn's lay in kept the score tied at the thirteen minute mark. Another Napier three-point field goal and consecutive baskets from Reesor gave Transylvania the 48-40 lead with 11:21 remaining.Â
With the second half winding down to the three minute mark, Penn scored a lay up through contact to give the Pioneers a six point lead. Two free throws from MSJ in the final minute led to a two point game at 64-62, however
Dakota Capps and
Hunter Barr would secure the victory at the free throw line down the stretch, 67-62.Â
"Mount St. Joseph did a tremendous job guarding us in the first half and holding us to six buckets inside the three," said Head Coach
Brian Lane. "I was really pleased with our defense because it kept us in the game through a tough offensive stretch. Once we got into our press, we got more aggressive and forced ten turnovers to get things more manageable at the half. We came out in the second half and executed a lot better offensively. We were able to knock down some threes that opened things up. Colby going five for ten from three was huge, along with
Dakota Capps' double double, 12 points and 10 rebounds."
Key Stats
- Transylvania outscored MSJ 19-11 in points off turnovers.Â
- The Pioneers outscored MSJ 15-8 in second chance opportunities.
