ANDERSON, Ind. - The Transylvania Men's Basketball team's season came to an end on Friday night with a 64-78 loss to Hanover in the semifinal of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The Pioneers finish the season 19-7.
Transy led a quarter of the way through the first at 16-14, but a Hanover three pointer gave the Panthers their first lead of the day. Both teams traded leads but Hanover took the lead 21-22 and didn't let go of it the rest of the game.
After trailing 39-27, the Pioneers went on a 7-1 run to head into the half trailing by 6. TU struggled from behind the arc in the game, making just 1 three pointer in the first half and 3 for the entire game.
The second half saw the Panthers tack on to their lead, extending it to as much as 18 (44-62) almost midway through the half. An 11-0 run by the Pioneers cut the deficit to 9, but Hanover soon got their lead back to double digits.
Matthew Teague led Transy in scoring with 18 points on 9-16 shooting. He tied for the team lead in assists with 3.
Colby Napier ended the game with 14 points.
Simon Smith finished with 10 points and a team high 9 rebounds.
Head Coach
Brian Lane gave his thoughts after the game.
"I am excited that this team was able to have one of our best conference records in a few years. We chose the wrong night to not be able to make shots and Hanover's defense was tremendous. The team was very upset after the game and it was an emotional locker room. The reason it was emotional was because they care deeply for each other and felt like they could earn a trip to the NCAA tournament. I'm proud of how this team developed from our preseason practices for the Bahamas, to the last second of tonight's game. They gave us all they had and that is what any coach ultimately can ask for from his team. This group of guys got us back to within a spot of being regionally ranked and it will be up to the returning guys on how we build on this year's success. Matthew, Jaylan, Simon and Brandon have been an unbelievable group of seniors and will leave a legacy of hard work, toughness, togetherness and friendship. The future looks bright because of their efforts the last four to five years."
Transylvania finished the season second in the HCAC regular season standings, and had three different players earn HCAC All-Conference honors -
Jaylan Green (First Team)
Matthew Teague (Honorable Mention), and
Hunter Penn (Honorable Mention). The 2 seed in the HCAC Tournament was the best seeding since the 2019-2020 season.Â
Transy Athletics thanks its four men's basketball seniors Jaylan, Simon, Matthew, and Brandon.
