LEXINGTON - No. 25 Transylvania Softball improved to 9-1 in conference play and 22-7 overall after sweeping Manchester on Sunday. The Pioneers came out on top in a pitching dual in game one 2-1 before shutting the Spartans out 8-0 in 5 innings in game two.
In game one,
Sophie Moshos moved to 9-3 on the season after throwing a complete game. She finished with 10 strikeouts and allowed only 1 run on 4 hits.
Stella Wulker continued to dominate at the plate this season. She put Transy on the board first with an RBI double down the left field line to score
Ella Steczynski in the first inning. Manchester tied the game in the third on back to back bunts with runners on base, but wouldn't score the rest of the day.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Avery Parsons singled with 2 outs then stole second.
Carson Murray singled to center field to score Parsons and give Transy the 2-1 lead. The Spartans would get a runner on second base in the sixth with one out, but couldn't capitalize and tie the game. MU would go down in order in the seventh to give Transy the win.
In game two, the Pioneer offense combined for 8 runs on 15 hits while
Carlee Jeter pitched a complete game shutout while giving up just 4 hits on the afternoon to mercy rule the Spartans 8-0.
Transylvania broke a 0-0 tie in the third with a sacrifice fly by
Dakota Burke that scored
Reagan Rouleau.
Katie Mewes would advance to third on the sacrifice fly and score the next at bat on a passed ball for a 2-0 Transy lead after the third.
Emily Hestand's pinch hit single in the fourth inning brought in
Emily Shearer and
Carson Murray to extend the lead to 4-0.
Reagan Rouleau scored on a fielder's choice for the 5-0 lead, then
Katie Mewes would be brought in on a bases loaded walk to make it 6-0 Transy heading into the fifth.
TU would end the game early after RBI singles by
Dakota Burke and
Ella Steczynski to win the game 8-0. It's the sixth time this season the Pioneers have won a game by mercy rule and the fifth time they've done it in conference play.
The doubleheader victory is the seventeenth straight win over Manchester dating back to 2015. Transy is now 9-0 all time against the Spartans at home.
Up next: Transylvania heads to Hanover this Tuesday to take on the Panthers at 1 and 3 PM.
