Maryville, TN – The Transylvania Pioneers dropped a midweek contest to the Maryville (Tenn.) Scots on Tuesday afternoon, falling by a score of 5-1 at Scotland Yard.
Transylvania took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman center fielder Ethan Dillon singled and stole second. He then advanced to third and scored on a fielding error, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. Â
Maryville responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. They added another run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 5-1 victory. Â
Offensively for the Pioneers, freshman center fielder Ethan Dillon had one hit and scored Transylvania's only run. Junior shortstop Seita Shiratori had a hit. Senior second baseman Henry Mitcham recorded a hit. Senior first baseman Austin Taylor had a hit. Sophomore left fielder Chris Hedinger doubled and had one hit. Junior designated hitter Houston Manning had a hit. Freshman catcher Trevor Watkins had a hit. Freshman right fielder Max Finn had a hit. Â
On the mound for Transylvania, sophomore pitcher Nathan Hale (0-1) took the loss, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Sophomore pitcher Henry Craig pitched 0.2 innings. Junior pitcher Luke Patton pitched 2.0 scoreless innings. Sophomore pitcher Gabe Dillard pitched 2.0 innings. Â
L. Denton (1-0) earned the win for Maryville.
Transylvania travels to Cincinnati for three games this weekend at Mount St. Joseph. Transylvania will take on MSJ in a double header beginning at 2 p.m. and a final game on Sunday at 1 p.m.Â
