SEWANEE, TN- Transylvania showed moments of fight and determination on Saturday afternoon but ultimately came up short against an undefeated Sewanee, falling 21–5 at Puett Field.
The Pioneers struck early and matched the Tigers in the opening minutes. After falling behind 2–0, Avery Kirkhope and Lula Thompson delivered back-to-back goals to tie the contest at 2–2 with just under 10 minutes left in the first quarter. Kirkhope would go on to lead the team with two goals on the afternoon.
Sophie Garrett added a goal and an assist, converting on a free-position attempt late in the second quarter, while Charlotte Green also tallied a goal and an assist as part of a productive day in the midfield. Thompson rounded out the scoring with one goal and one assist as the Pioneers worked to create offensive momentum against a strong Sewanee defense.
Grace Smilek-Edwards played all 60 minutes between the pipes and made 10 saves, facing 39 total shots as she anchored the defense under pressure.
The Pioneers return home Tuesday for a conference showdown at Pat Deacon Stadium with HCLC opponent Mount St. Joseph. First draw is set for 7:00 p.m.
