LEXINGTON, Ky. -Transylvania men's soccer couldn't shake the Engineers Saturday, as a battle of two of the top Heartland Conference teams resulted in a stalemate, tied 1-1 at the end of double overtime.
The tie moves the Pioneers to 9-3-2 overall, 3-1-1 Heartland Conference, strong enough for a second-place tie.
Transylvania has allowed only two first half goals this season, and that early defensive pressure showed on Saturday. The Engineers were held to zero shots in the opening 45 minutes, receiving only one opportunity off corner kicks.
The Pioneers dominated possession during the first half, with Smith taking six of eight shots on the Engineer cage in the first 32 minutes. After dominating the Engineers' zone with little success, the Pioneers grabbed the lead in the 40th minute thanks to freshman
Matt Melzer. Melzer, assisted by senior
Kyle Smith, found the back of the net for his first goal of his collegiate career.
Junior
Max Robinson attempted a last minute shot for a two-point lead, but it sailed high of the Engineer goal, leaving the Pioneers with a fragile one-point lead into the half.
The second half saw a spark by the Rose-Hulman squad. In the 60th minute, following a Transylvania yellow card, the Engineers tied the game up, as Ben Lyon made a quick move into the net past Pioneer goalkeeper
Cody Waltrip.
Transylvania responded, with junior
Stephen Willoughby, junior Luke Dehener and Smith attacking with four shots on goal, three of which were snatched up by Engineer goalkeeper Miller. In the final two minutes before the break, the Pioneers hit a corner kicks and Smith nailed a bullet high of the net, keeping the game scoreless.
The first overtime period saw only one shot, taken by Rose-Hulman at the 99-minute mark, but was saved by an outstretched Waltrip, sending the teams into a second overtime.
The momentum swung to Transylvania, but the team was never able to find its offensive stride. Scoring opportunities were few in overtime play as each team took only one shot. Neither team was capable of snagging their golden goal by the end of the 110 minutes, giving the Pioneers their second tie of the season.
Transylvania takes a road trip for their final away games, heading to Earlham on October 22 and Defiance on October 26 before heading home to close out the season against Mount St. Joseph and Bluffton.
