LEXINGTON, Ky. â€" A second-half offensive attack wasn't enough to lift the Pioneers Tuesday night, as they fell in overtime to the Wilmington Fightin' Quakers, 0-1.
The Quakers controlled the tempo early in the game, taking eight shots in the first half of the contest, four of which were saved by Pioneer goalkeeper,
Cody Waltrip. Â But it didn't take long for the Pioneers to turn up the heat.
The second half saw an intensive Transylvania attack at the Quaker goal. The Pioneers peppered Wilmington goalkeeper Anton Niklasson with 15 shots, nine of which were saved.
"Transy really turned the switch on and came at us hard," said Quaker Head Coach Bud Lewis. "They controlled tempo…[and] put a lot of pressure on us."
Despite the effort, time ticked away, leaving the Pioneers and Quakers deadlocked by the end of regulation, 0-0.
It was less than three minutes into the extra session that an intended clearing kick from Transylvania ricocheted off the leg of Quaker junior Evan Schlageetter, past Pioneer goalkeeper
Taylor Nossokoff, and into the Transylvania goal.
Transylvania (3-2) returns to the pitch Saturday, Sept. 14 at Marietta College.
