Box Score TERRA HAUTE, Ind.—The Transylvania University men's soccer
team battled their way to a scoreless draw in their Saturday
matchup against conference opponent Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology.
The Pioneers and Engineers both turned in a strong defensive
performance that limited offense and minimized scoring
opportunities in the match. As a result, the game finished in a 0-0
tie after 110 minutes of play.
Transylvania did not manage to put any of its first seven shot
attempts on goal and ultimately, only two of their nine shots in
the match found their target. The first 90 minutes of play did not
see a Pioneers shot on goal, and it wasn't until freshman
midfielder Jacob Hill put a
header into Rose-Hulman goalie Drew Miller's hands at the 91:52
mark, that Transy challenged the goalkeeper.
Not to be outdone, the Pioneer defense held strong and despite
several miscues in the first half, Transylvania locked in during
the second half and overtime. Transy allowed four shots on goal in
the first half but then refused to allow another legitimate scoring
threat until the second overtime.
"We knew Rose-Hulman was going to be very organized and strong
defensively," head coach Matt Vogel said. "We had to very
methodical in our approach and I thought we did some things to give
us some decent chances, but just lacked that final finish. We had
several guys step up big time today and was pleased with our
overall team effort."
The tie brings Transylvania's record to 5-5-1 on the season and
1-1-1 in HCAC play. The Pioneers return home for two conference
games this week, October 15 against Earlham and October 18 against
Defiance.
