Men's soccer continues push for HCAC tournament with 1-1 tie

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Two overtime periods were not enough to determine a winner as the Transylvania University men's soccer team played its way to a 1-1 draw with Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Hanover College on a mild night at Pat Deacon Stadium.

Regulation time was bookended by a goal from each team, with midfielder Riley Calhoon putting the Pioneers up 1-0 in the 12th minute of the match. Hanover spent the rest of the match playing catchup, trying to draw the score even. They accomplished just that with a free kick goal in the 86th minute to force overtime.

Calhoon's goal was an impressive effort, driving a shot over the outsretched arms of the Panther's goalkeeper from more than 30 yards out on the left flank, resulting in his team-leading sixth goal of the season. The goal highlighted a strong attacking night for Calhoon, who put five shots on target in the contest.

All told, the Pioneers fired off nine shots in the match, putting 100% of those shots on target. While the the Transy offense was patient and efficient, Hanover fired off shots from all over the field, taking 22 but putting just 13 on goal.

After the late Panther goal, Transylvania pressed forward for much of the remainder of the game, working the ball around in the Hanover defensive zone and looking for an opportunity to break loose and net the win. Midfielder Tyler Joy-Brandon gave the Pioneers their best scoring chance at the midway point of the second overtime, firing a shot towards the net but it was narrowly saved by Hanover to keep the tie intact.

Transylvania moves to 4-1-3 in HCAC play and 7-3-7 on the season, holding firmly to a fourth place standing in the conference with one weekend remaining in the season. The Pioneers hold a two-point advantage over the fifth place team and are just one point behind third place Earlham; the top four teams earn a berth in the HCAC tournament.

The Pioneers will return to the pitch on Saturday with a road contest at Anderson University. That game is set to kickoff at 3:30pm.
