Box Score FRANKLIN, Ind.—The Transylvania University men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw against Carroll College on Saturday as part of the Daniel Schuetz Community Classic, hosted by Franklin College.
The Pioneers opened quickly and attacked the Carroll defense from the onset, taking a shot just three minutes into the match. The shot by midfielder Riley Calhoon was one of 14 shots in the game for Transy and set the pace for the rest of the game.
Midfielder Freddie Siegleman capitalized on the pressure created by the Pioneer offense, sending a shot past the Carroll goalkeeper at the 11:09 mark to push Transylvania in front 1-0.
"It was nice to get on the board early, which gave us a lot of momentum at the beginning of the game," said head coach Matt Vogel.
The lead would not hold, however, as the Pioneers relented a goal four minutes later, knotting the score at one goal apiece. Transy would attack the net several more times in the half but were unable to push ahead; a strong defensive effort by the Transylvania defense held Carroll at bay for the remainder of the period and the teams entered the locker room with the score holding at 1-1.
Early in the second half, Carroll would take their first lead of the game and take a 2-1 advantage with 35 minutes to play in the final period. The Pioneers would not wait long to even the score again with forward Blake Chidester's second goal of the season.
Transy would continue to challenge Carroll's back line and threatened to score again throughout the rest of the second half but failed to push ahead and regulation ended in a 2-2 tie. After two overtime periods and a strong showing by the Transylvania defense and goalkeeper Cody Waltrip, the match ended with the score still deadlocked.
Despite the even score, Vogel found several positives in the game. "We correct (several) issues and we win this game," Vogel said. "However, the good news is that we are scoring goals. We will take the lessons learned from this game as we have a short turnaround for our game tomorrow."
The Pioneers (1-1-2) take the pitch again on Sunday in a matchup with Trine University at 12:00pm.
