Box Score Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's soccer team claimed their second victory of the Mary Ann Waford Memorial with a 1-0 victory against the previously undefeated Alma College Scots on Sunday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium.
The victory capped off a two weekend-long homestand comprising four home games. The Pioneers made the most of their extended time in Lexington to begin the season with three wins and one draw, their best start since the 2012-13 season.
Transylvania controlled the game offensively from start to finish. As a team, the Pioneers outshot the Scots 32 to 7 on the afternoon. Transylvania was led on offense by junior midfielder Josh Morgan, who fired off seven shots on the day, four of which came on goal.
Defensively the Pioneers smothered the Scots all afternoon, as they allowed a mere two shots on goal. The Pioneers' defensive pressure made for an easy day for Transylvania freshman goalkeeper Chandler Gaunce, who recorded two saves en route to his fourth shutout in as many games.
After applying pressure to the Alma goalkeeper all day, the Pioneers finally found the scoring touch with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Senior forward Blake Chidester came charging into the box to score the go-ahead goal off a beautiful assist from sophomore forward/midfielder Tyler Joy-Brandon.
Prior to Sunday's match, Alma had not given up a goal on the season, and had outscored their opponents 6-0 in their four victories.
Following the weekend's pair of victories, the Transylvania men's soccer team will head to Wilmington, Ohio on Wednesday to take on Wilmington College. The game is set for an 8:00 p.m. start from Townsend Field at Williams Stadium.
