Box Score Lexington, Ky.—The Transylvania men's soccer team kicked their season off in explosive fashion, as it defeated the Berea College Mountaineers 10 to 0 on Friday night's opening match of the Transylvania Soccer Showcase.
Transylvania dominated the game on both ends of the field, as they outshot Berea 37-4 on the day. Defensively, the Pioneers backline allowed only one shot on goal, helping to preserve a shutout for freshman goalkeeper Chandler Gaunce.
The Pioneers also earned ten corner kicks while shutting out Berea in that category.
The new season was barely three minutes old when junior midfielder Riley Calhoon's shot found the back of the net for the Pioneer's first goal of the season. From there, the shots kept flying for Transylvania. A goal by junior Jacob Gantt at the 8:54 mark was followed up by a pair of goals from freshman forward Charlie Wend over the next eight minutes. Wend was one of three different Pioneers to register a brace in the win.
At the break, Transylvania led Berea 5-0. The second half would follow a similar script to the first half. After a Morgan goal, the freshman duo of Jax Young and Cubaka Mutayongwa added two more goals, making the score 7-0 in favor of the Pioneers.
At the 60 minute mark, Calhoon added his second goal of the day. Senior forward Blake Chidester capped off the scoring for Transylvania, as he sparked two goals in the final twenty minutes of action. Chidester led the Pioneers in scoring on the day with two goals and an assist.
The Pioneers improve to 1-0 on the young season and will face Wooster College Sunday at Pat Deacon Stadium in the final match of the Transylvania Soccer Showcase. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
